Co-selections and Phraseologies in Language Use and Research

This talk focuses on the important roles different types of phraseology play in language communication and language learning. To start with, I explain several key concepts in corpus linguistics, including collocation, colligation, concordance and co-selections. Then I move on to the important places of phraseologies in the language system and language use. Based on my corpus- driven studies of phraseology in past decades, I set out to expound a range of co-selections in language use, i.e. the co-selection between lexis and lexis, the co-selection between lexis and grammar, and the co-selection between patterning and function. More specifically, I argue that lexis and grammar are not chosen independently of each other for expressing meanings and functions. Rather, language forms, meanings and functions are co-selected, given specific communicative contexts and purposes. Inevitably, this results in different types of phraseology and their limited range of variations, which are inseparably bound with the naturalness and idiomaticity of language use, whether in terms of speaking, writing and translating or in terms of research. And I will show with sufficient evidence the interconnections between native-like or otherwise phraseologies and language performance.

卫乃兴，北京航空航天大学亚星游戏官网868教授、副院长，重庆大学兼职教授，中国语料库语言学研究会会长，语言学与应用语言学博士生导师，《外语与外语教学》、《解放军亚星游戏官网868学报》、《语料库语言学》、《当代外语研究》等期刊编委，国家社科基金项目通讯评审专家，教育部学位与研究生教育学科通讯评审专家，兼任香港城市大学博士生导师。
卫乃兴教授长期从事语料库语言学、应用语言学等领域研究。先后主持国家社会科学基金项目4项，教育部985工程项目2项，出版学术专著6部，在 “International Journal of Corpus Linguistics” 、“Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory” 、 “Corpora: pragmatics and discourse”、《外语教学与研究》、《现代外语》、《当代语言学》、《外国语》等SSCI与CSSCI期刊发表论文40余篇。
